The initiative to take local products prepared in the state’s rural areas to national and global markets is now transforming into a strong business model. The umbrella brand ‘House of Himalayas’, created through the hard work of rural women of Uttarakhand, has recorded a turnover of about Rs 6 crore since its inception.

The launch of House of Himalayas gained national recognition when Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself unveiled the brand during the Uttarakhand Global Investors Summit held in Dehradun in December 2023. The Prime Minister described it as an effort advancing the concept of ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Local for Global’.

Under the brand, products associated with Uttarakhand’s local identity have been introduced to the market with modern packaging, better quality, and integrated branding. Currently, a total of 83 products, including 60 specialty products, have been included in this brand. These include categories like pahari (mountain) pulses, grains, spices, honey, oil, herbal and personal care products, along with handicrafts. Categories such as millets, pulses, rice, oil & ghee, spices, honey, herbal products, bakery items, personal care, and handicrafts have also been made available on the official brand website.

The most important aspect of House of Himalayas is its women-centric livelihood model. About 5,500 direct women beneficiaries associated with 55 Cluster Level Federations are directly connected to the economic activities of this brand. This means that along with mountain-made products finding a wider market, their direct financial benefits are reaching rural women.

Available online as well

Now, the reach of House of Himalayas is no longer limited to the local market. Consumers can buy its products on e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart. Through quick commerce, House of Himalayas products are also available on Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and BigBasket. Additionally, the facility of direct purchasing across the country is being provided through the brand’s own D2C website. Furthermore, the brand’s products are also being made available in international markets such as the US and Canada through Amazon Global.

“House of Himalayas is a significant initiative to bring recognition to Uttarakhand’s local products in national and international markets. In line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s ‘Local to Global’ vision, the products of the state’s Matrushakti (women power), farmers, and rural entrepreneurs are being provided an international market through this brand. Our goal is to ensure that products made in the villages of Uttarakhand find a global market, and its direct benefit strengthens the economy of our women self-help groups and local producers.” Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister, Uttarakhand
